From a Scientist to an Entrepreneur

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

As a female founder and a women in AI and technology, I love sharing my career journey to encourage more women to join the AI revolution. Earlier this year, for the International Women’s Day in March 2020, Cleo AI have invited me to share my journey with their lovely team. In this talk, I discuss my career path and how, starting my career as a software engineer, I have become an AI research scientist and after my PhD and almost seven wonderful years in academia, I moved into the startup world. Soon after, I created my own - Sentient Machines.

In this talk, I summarised challenges from managing and building successful career and teams, to being managed, and most importantly, investing in learning and self-development as a way to enrich not only your own experience of life, but also the life of those around you.

My Journey into Artificial Intelligence

THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD

In 2011 I received my PhD in AI on the topic of Natural Language Interfaces for Querying Ontologies from the University of Sheffield. It was here that I developed the FREyA system which scored as the best question answering system against the DBpedia knowledge base (structured Wikipedia) in the QALD-1 Challenge 2011.

I recently returned to give a talk on my journey into Artificial Intelligence, and then becoming an entrepreneur soon after I left the University. I shared some of the challenges I faced, as well as lessons learned.

Building Dialogue Systems: Challenges and Applications

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology: DeepHack.Turing

I was honoured to speak at the summer school on Dialogue Systems at MIPT, at their DeepHack.Turing event. The school was organised as a satellite event for the NIPS Conversational Intelligence Challenge (convai.io). The lecture discusses dialogue systems, how to build them, main challenges with the current state of the art, and their applications.
